1931 – INVITATION TO CAST OUT CARE by V. SACKVILLE-WEST Copy 172 of 200 SIGNED
“This large-paper edition, printed on English hand-made paper, is limited to two hundred copies / This is Number 172 / [signed] V. Sackville West.” This is No. 37 of THE ARIEL POEMS published in London by Faber & Faber Limited, at 24 Russell Square, W.C.1 THE ARIEL POEMS series was published between 1927 and 1931 in editions of from 200 to 500 copies each. A complete set sold in 2017 for well over $10,000. The only record I can find for the limited INVITATION TO CAST OUT CARE is in a 2018 London bookseller catalogue for £250.
With drawings by Graham Sutherland. Sackville-West’s thirty-two line poem is accompanied by one black and white half-title drawing, and one full-page colour drawing.
This copy is good, but lacking original glassine jacket, and exhibiting rubbing/wear/and soiling to the boards. Internally very good. Book measures about 5 1/2 inches by 8 3/4 inches. There is a “Special Collections” sticker on the front free-endpaper. A duplicate copy, this was deaccessioned by the institution. Do not confuse this edition with the trade edition in wraps – and not limited and signed.
below you can see the sticker I mention above – the duplicate statement is on the protective cover (not shown)
and the rear board
