“TO KEEP BUSY THE LITTLE HANDS and LITTLE HEAD” published by Sam’l. Gambriel, Sons & Company, New York. Box set of five activity books, detailed below (box measures about 10 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches and almost one inch in depth – two small breaks on box). Originally sold with two small boxes of crayons, these are lacking here. Sets like this were made to keep children busy, thus used and consumed — seldom surviving, especially essentially unused. When and if found, Samuel Gambriel children’s titles by this company are pricey. Included are:

SUSAN LENOX – PORTFOLIO by HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY 1915 HEARST’S MAGAZINE – 8 COLOR PLATES
An uncommon portfolio of eight color plates by Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952) in his typical style. As you can see in the Hearst ad below (not included, I found on-line), Christy considered these images his best work yet. Susan Lenox – Her Rise and Fall was written by David Graham Phillips and posthumously published in 1917. Susan was an unrepentant prostitute. A 1931 film of the same name starred Greta Garbo and Clark Gable, their only film together. Published in 1915 by Hearst’s Magazine, the plates are 11 inches by 14 inches on a heavy paper simulating canvas and are in the original fold-over folder. The folder is lacking part of the top flap which allowed one plate to have some dust residue which with care can be removed. The other plates are spotless and gorgeous. The fold-over seam of the folder has separated.
I have the only known portfolio available, and in my shop for $400. Offered here to entice you to adorn your walls with Susan for less.
This first image shows the folder unopened
and, then opened showing the separation of the folder
and here are the 8 plates, the first as you can see having some soiling since it was exposed. But, it could probably be cleaned, or at least covered by a mat when framed.
the poses have been described as follows: visiting a friend; putting on a bonnet; at the pond; tipping a waiter; taking a nap; dressing in front of a mirror; spending time with a suitor; and daydreaming by a fence.

Although I am mainly a bookseller, I have over the years collected a number of various fun and interesting things, and often when buying books from estates I purchase items that catch my eyes. But I cannot keep everything, and also enjoy sharing and finding new homes for my treasures.
For over twenty-six years I have offered some miscellaneous items on eBay as well as books which because of minor flaws I prefer to offer there fully illustrated and at reduced prices. I try to maintain over 200 such offerings on eBay and currently have about 240 items there. You may realize that the on-line listing websites charge commissions – just a cost of doing business. But what I would like to do for my followers here on RAY BOAS, BOOKSELLER, is to offer a DISCOUNT FOR A DIRECT PURCHASE, saving you what I would have to pay as a commission (plus).
So, here is my offer — 15 percent off the eBay “buy it now price” on the items I now have listed (and those listings change daily). If interested, please take a look, and feel free to share this offer with your friends – hey, the idea is to find “new homes” for my “fun things.” Shipping is in addition, and what is on those listings. If you wish one of these items, email me and mention the item, and as others say, mention the discount code “AUNTIE EM” — and this goes for your friends as well, so please share this post. I will then delete the eBay listing and we will arrange payment. Want to take a look?
