1890 – KEENE ILLUSTRATED – KEENE, NH
J. A. FRENCH, PHOTOGRAPHER – NEW HAMPSHIRE
An uncommon, and sought after accordian style fold-out view book with sixty (60) views on 12 panels that open all the way out. Individual views appear to be a much greater number than 60 in total. Each panel measures about 5 5/8 inches by about 4 5/8 inches, the covers are about 6 inches by 5 inches. Faint, old, repaired tear on the front paste-down, probably by an improper opening at one time
A Cheshire County, NH, photographer from 1857 to 1898, French’s studio was at 9 Central Square in Keene. There is a separate “rubber stamp” showing this copy to have been sold at B. A. Knight’s 4 and 9 Cent Store, 9 Bridgeman’s Block in Keene. I love this item, love French’s stereoviews of Walpole, NH, but cannot keep it all. This should head a few miles back down to a Keene collection.

1924-25 WHITE MOUNTAIN NATURAL CURIOSITY BOOKLETS – BOXED SET
In the 1920s, Guy Roberts of Whitefield, New Hampshire, published a number of booklets of the natural beauty and wonders of the White Mountain tourist areas. Roberts loved the area, and the Old Man of the Mountains. In 1906 he discovered the condition of the Old Man, and advocated for measures to be taken to secure the rocks.
His booklets are often found, and when found run $25 and up. His booklets measure about 3 1/4 inches by 6 1/4 inches, and in some instances the text opens up on a fan-fold sheet. Boxed sets were sold, and this auction is for one of the Roberts’ Series in the original box. The paper label from the box top is chipped and loose, and the sides of the box top lid are lacking as you will see later – below are the booklets in this set:

1816 and 1835 – DARTMOUTH COLLEGE ARCHIVE – FOUR BOOKLETS – HANOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE
The Old Settler Bookshop was a Walpole, NH, tradition from 1929 to 1987 when its owner, Bob Kolvoord died. Bob made many a trip to Hanover buying books and libraries. When the c1786 home the shop was in was sold, about ten years ago, I had the opportunity to purchase what stock remained tucked away. Part of the remaining stash included these four early Dartmouth College pamphlets.
First is an 1816 printing of the Charter of Dartmouth College. Measuring about 5 inches by 8 1/2 inches, the 14 pages are bound by a thread, but were never trimmed nor bound. Unopened, and never read. Value on-line $175.
Three pamphlets pertain to popular Dartmouth chemistry professor Benjamin Hale. When he fell into disfavor, he was forced out when the Trustees dissolved the position he held. These pamphlets relate those circumstances circa 1835; and, include:
1-VALEDICTORY LETTER TO THE TRUSTEES OF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE -Benj. Hale, October 27, 1835. 24 pages measuring about 4 3/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches.
2- PROFESSOR HALE AND DARTMOUTH COLLEGE – by ALUMNUS – 23 pages measuring about 4 3/8 inches by 7 inches
3-REMARKS ON A PAMPHLET ENTITLED “PROF. HALE AND DARTMOUTH COLLEGE.” by an INVESTIGATOR – reported to be Daniel Oliver, published in Hanover 1835 – 34 pages measuring about 4 1/2 inches by 7 inches.
Following are some sample pages from each publication in this interesting historical look at early Dartmouth and it history.

$10 — Order Number eb1249

1876 – HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF PETERBOROUGH, HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, NEW HAMPSHIRE
With the Report of the Proceedings at the Centennial Celebration in 1839: An Appendix Containing the Records of the Original Proprietors; and a Genealogical and Historical Register.
By Albert Smith, Published Press of George H. Ellis, Boston, MA, 1876. 360 pages, fold-out map (not illustrated here), a few illustrations; and, followed by 365 pages GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL REGISTER. Condition Note – loose hinges, and some signatures a tad loose. However, a good serviceable “working copy” of the original edition for the historian. This first edition usually runs $300 and up.
Selling books full-time for over 30 years, I do not like to catalog material with faults – easier with a picture, so you know what you are buying. Thus a low price, for this and the other items I also offer “sold with all faults – WAF.”

1936 – BICENTENNIAL HISTORY OF GORHAM, MAINE 1736-1939 – Walter H. Johnson
AN ACCOUNT OF THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE TOWN, Compiled and Edited by Walter H. Johnson, Illustrated by Hayden L. V. Anderson, Published by the General Committee of the Bicentennial – Henry S. Cobb, Printer, Westbrook, Maine. 171 pages, black and white illustrations, hardcover.
Offered here so I can illustrate the slight damp staining along the top edge of the book block and pages which has caused some “water weave” to the paper and some faint staining. But, most important, no pages are stuck, or ever have been stuck to each other. A good copy for your reference, and priced accordingly. First image of the front cover shows it a tad lighter than the maroon color really is – sorry.

image below an attempt to show you some of the effect of the damp stain – not really bad…
