THE UNIVERSAL PENMAN by GEORGE BICKHAM
Original – circa 1741 plate
THE HONEST MERCHANT – THOROWGOOD TO TRUEMAN by G. BLAND
An original copperplate engraving from Bickham’s noted work. Paper measures about 9 7/8 inches by 15 1/2 inches. There is some light foxing as you can see, and an old bend/fold on the lower right. When I obtained this example it was framed in a totally inappropriate metal frame, and double matted. To save on shipping costs (and you would not have wanted the 20th century metal frame with an original 18th century engraving) I am selling the print in the old matte as illustrated.
George Bickham was the most famous English writing master and engraver of the early 18th century and was best known for his engraving work in “The Universal Penman”, a collection of writing examplars which helped to popularize the English Round Hand script in the 18th century.
and here is the backside, showing you how it is partially attached to the backing.
and a close up of the very well done hand-coloring to the illustration
