c1956 – PROCESS OF PRINTING WOOD ENGRAVING – UTAMARO (1753-1806) One of “TWELVE SKETCHES OF HANDICRAFT ARTS FOR WOMEN”

Hardcover, paper covered boards, measuring about  6⅞ × 9¾. Opens with accordion-fold, 22 pages. Colors a tad off on front cover above – discoloration not as pronounced in “real life.”  Label on rear page “Red Lantern Shop – Dealer in Japanese Woodcut Colour Prints – Kyoto.” Published to display of the art of Japanese color woodblock printing, and how they are done in a progressive series of fold-out pages (on one continuous sheet) showing the steps, starting first with the black outline block. Each of the 9 colors (ochre, grays, peach, reds, blues, and black) is added one at a time. A double spread shows the print with a single color facing the resulting cumulative state of the color woodblock print. The finished plate is last—Utamaro’s “One of Twelve Sketches of Handicraft Arts for Women,” which shows two women cooking, one cutting with a knife.

“The pages to the left are numbered and explain and illustrate the individual steps (woodblock impressions) as the print moves to completion. The first page after the title page describes the illustration and starts the process with the “Out Line Printing.” The page to the right contains the black and white key block. After the key block, the left page has the next woodblock impression applied and the page to the right shows the cumulative state of the print. The woodblock progresses from the outline/key block through the application of 9 additional woodblock impressions. In total the book is created by using 10 woodblocks (key block and 9 additional blocks).” —  description from a site on-line. This copy does not include the four page insert. In my research I have found only one copy ever offered for sale.

here is the beginning showing the blank black and white outline

on the left side of each progression of the process is shown the areas of color to be printed on the B&W outline on the right – and then showing the progressive color printings

PETROUCHKA from THE DEAD SOULS ENGRAVING by MARC CHAGALL

PETROUCHKA from THE DEAD SOULS
ENGRAVING by MARC CHAGALL

Chagall, Marc (1887-1985) – Original etching and drypoint engraved by the artist for the book “Dead Souls” By Nikolai Gogol, “Dead Souls”, first published in 1842, is widely regarded as an exemplar of 19th-century Russian literature. The purpose of the novel was to demonstrate the flaws and faults of the Russian mentality and character. Wikipedia

Signed within the plate ‘M. Chagall’ in lower left (engraved, not real signature). A total of 368 plates – 335 unsigned impressions, and 33 HC which stands for “Hors commerce” (not for sale as part of the edition). In pencil on the lower left is XXI/XXXIII indicating this is number 21 of the 33 HCs.

on the backside (below) you can see remnants of mounting tape – easily removed I imagine, but I will let you do that. Sheet of paper measures about 11 inches by about 15 inches, and the engraving impression about 8 1/2 by 11 1/4

Price -SOLD

This price is a “bargain” compared to the only other copy currently for sale, and in the UK for 950 pounds. But, as a bookseller I just prefer to pass along non-book items.

1858 – OUR SUMMER RETREATS – A HAND BOOK

1858 – OUR SUMMER RETREATS – A HAND BOOK
To all the Chief Waterfalls, Spring, Mountain and Sea side Resorts and other Places of Interest in the
United States

Published by T. Nelson and Sons, New York. 64 pages measuring about 5 3/4 inches by 3 3/4 inches – softcover with wear as shown. Sabin Americana, 1500–1926 number 57940. Hardcover edition calls for 12 plates. I have in my personal summer resort collection the hardcover edition with 4 plates only. For comparison I have illustrated my copy below.

Oddly, the back of the softcover edition lists the views (plates), BUT there is no evidence of plates ever having been in this edition. I wonder if this is a prospectus, or inexpensive copy without plates to promote the sale of the hardcover with plates. The binding has been repaired with glue externally, again with no evidence of anything having been removed. For some reason the bottom 60% of the title page has been cut out of this copy – but I have included an image of the title page from my copy.

The index to places described includes: Alburg Springs; Cape May; Catskill Mountains; Genesee Falls; Highgate Springs; Lake George and Lake Champlain; Missiquoi Bay; Niagara Falls (in much extended detail); Nahant; Newport; Saratoga Springs; Trenton Falls; Virginia Springs &c; and, the White Mountains.

This is an uncommon title, and if found is valued at $500 plus. Below is the cut title page of this copy

and, two sample two page spreads

FOR COMPARISON ONLY – here is my personal hardcover edition – if you really need this copy, we can discuss (I cannot keep everything).

and the full title page – most likely a frontispiece missing since a tissue guard remains.

and a few of the illustrations in my personal copy

PRICE (softcover edition) – $95

HAND GRIPS – STORY OF THE GREAT GETTYSBURG REUNION, JULY, 1913 with GAR EPHEMERA

HAND GRIPS – STORY OF THE GREAT GETTYSBURG REUNION, JULY, 1913 with GAR EPHEMERA
50th Anniversary Battle of Gettysburg
Grand Army of the Republic

by COMRADE WALTER H. BLAKE, Compiled by Frank E. Channon, G. E. Smith, Publisher, Vineland, N.J. – Good+, blue cloth, all edges gilt (AEG), 214 pages, B&W illustrations. Chapters include:”Fall In” – On the Skirmish Line – Around the Camp Fire – A Reconnoissance – The Commissariat – On the Firing Line – Stories Around the Camp Fire – Big Guns in Action – Stand at Ease – The Charge – Cease Firing – Taps.

This unusual item was in an estate of books that I purchased in about 1992 when my bookshop was in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Just one of those things I never wanted to part with, but now is the time I should find a new home for this unusual collection.

The book is in the bottom part of its original presentation box. Included as originally found are: 1) portrait of Blake measuring about 5 3/8 inches by about 7 1/4 inches, 2) IOOF – Odd Fellows key to The Golden Gate – San Francisco, CA, September 1904, and, 3) real photo postcard of the Mothers Garden of Remembrance at Vineland, NJ – in his book, Blake states that of all the monuments at Gettysburg, there are none “to the memory of the courageous mothers.” Noting what is in the lot leads me to the strong conviction that these items, along with the book, are Walter H. Blake’s own items

the wooden souvenir key had been kept inside the front of the book for decades

and front and backs of the key and RPPC from Vineland – the Souvenir IOOF Key is about 7 1/8 inches long

DAV LICENSE PLATE KEY-CHAIN TAGS — DISABLED AMERICAN VERTERANS

The Disabled American Veterans, recognized the impact it would have with the outset of World War II. In 1941, To raise funds, DAV launched a direct mail campaign, distributing “IdentoTags”, miniature license plates which could be attached to a keyring with instructions that lost keys should be mailed to the DAV, who would return them to the owners. The DAV got state motor vehicle departments to co-operate and provide mailing lists of the people who registered their cars. The DAV mailed key-chain tags with your license plate number on it, and asked for a donation. Thus, if you lost your keys, the finder would drop them into a mail box, the keys would be forwarded to the DAV which would return them to you. The program continued from 1941 through 1975, and was ended because of a “right to privacy” rule.

I have collected DAV tags for decades, and it is now time to share my collections with others. These have now all been sold, but I am leaving this post only so you may enjoy browsing through.  – thank you, RAY

TRIUMPH TR3A – YELLOW – KYOSHO 1:18 SCALE DIE-CAST CAR SERIES

TRIUMPH TR3A – YELLOW – KYOSHO 1:18 SCALE DIE-CAST CAR SERIES

NOW OPEN
RAY’S AUTO MUSEUM and AUTO SALES

I wanted a TR3 since my neighbors first bought two in the late 1950s. During my Navy career almost bought one in South Carolina, and then almost again in Philadelphia. In 2009 I really got the bug to buy one. When in a model shop in St. Augustine, Florida, I spotted this model. The shop owner apologized for the high price explaining, “yellow is a rare color for this model.” I bought it anyway. And, in January 2010, I found my 1958 TR3A which I had been off the road since 1969. I now enjoy that and my 1960 MGA, so maybe moving this model onto the next owner will bring he or her luck in finding their perfect ride. I probably am the first one to ever open this box to take these images for you. ENJOY, yours, RAY

1936 – THE STORY OF THE BOOKWORM – LEARY’S BOOK STORE, PHILADELPHIA – PLATE and BOOKLET

1936 – THE STORY OF THE BOOKWORM – LEARY’S BOOK STORE, PHILADELPHIA – PLATE and BOOKLET

In the early 1990s my bookshop was in Haddonfield, NJ, across the river from Philadelphia. Many of the libraries and collections of books I purchased had an old price in blue pencil on the front pastedown. A sign that the book had been sold at the iconic Leary’s Bookstore- that is how they marked their used books. Also over those years I collected much Leary’s ephemera which I need to get to get to the next “home.” But, I just got into a box from an estate I purchased almost 30 years ago – it was three generations of book collectors. Stuffed inside I found an 9 1/2 inch by 11 1/2 inch envelope addressed to the first generation of collectors. Inside is a copy of THE BOOK WORM sent out to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Leary’s Old Book Store in 1936. This copy (I have my own that I framed years ago) is still in the original glassine, but over time there was some shrinkage to the glassine thus causing some folds on the plate — BUT that is in the margins, and can be matted out easily, in fact my copy the way it is matted you would not see this fault.

AND, really scarce and included is THE STORY OF THE BOOK WORM, a small booklet measuring about 4 1/16 inches by 5 13/16 inches with 8 pages. The frontis is a B&W image of the BOOK WORM plate, and the rear cover a color image of Leary’s Store. Reprinted in 1936 from an article in The Evening Bulletin, laid in is a sheet indicating the recipient would also be receiving a “reproduction in full color of the famous painting.” This family dated (in pencil) almost everything. They received the booklet September 10, 1936. THIS BOOKLET IS EXTREMELY UNCOMMON.

Below you can see the effect the original glassing had on the margins of the plate – easily covered by a mat.

Price for the collection – SOLD

Incredible — some extremely faint moisture spots on the glossy paper, and some pink ink seems to have run at some point in this booklet’s life, but nothing impacting on the images that I think are to “die for” and make me want to purchase a 1934 Buick.  ENJOY – I have looking at this.

1902 – L. FRANK BAUM – THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF SANTA CLAUS – FIRST EDITION / FIRST STATE

1902 – L. FRANK BAUM – THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF SANTA CLAUS

Published by The Bowen-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, IN. Good, decorated red cloth, 206 pages, remnants of bookplate on front pastedown, front endpaper tad cracked (paper only not the hinge)

This copy is the FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE with chapter headings reading Book First, Book Second, Book Third. Illustrated with 6 full color plates (which includes the title page) and 14 two-color plates by MARY COWLES CLARK — I have page checked this copy several times, all plates are present. Curiously when I compared the page checks with my own personal copy, one plate is tipped in four pages differently. Not uncommon when this operation is done by hand

For comparison information the SECOND STATE – has 12 tipped in color plates, which includes the frontis. & title-page. Also, with the second state the section headings are now labeled “Youth,” “Manhood,” and “Old Age.” This second state includes many textual illustrations and decorations, mainly in the margins, not present in the first state
