The No Name Series, published by Roberts Brothers in Boston from 1876-1887, with the idea of keeping the authors anonymous. The series included 37 volumes. A contemporary ad announced the series: “These novels are to be written by eminent authors, and in each case the authorship of the work is to remain an unavoidable secret… No name will help the novel, or story, to success. Its success will depend solely on the writer’s ability to catch and retain the reader’s interest. From a current review, “A novel of psychological complexity that touches on controversial subjects such as sexuality and drug use, A Modern Mephistopheles is a penetrating and powerful study of human evil and its appalling consequences.” BAL 184 – Wright 36.
