1877 – A MODERN MEPHISTOPHELES – LOUISA MAY ALCOTT
FIRST EDITION – UNCOMMON

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1877, 290 pages, publisher’s advertisements. Hardcover, good, wear to cloth and some light foxing, cant to bookblock as seen below.

The No Name Series, published by Roberts Brothers in Boston from 1876-1887, with the idea of keeping the authors anonymous. The series included 37 volumes.  A contemporary ad announced the series: “These novels are to be written by eminent authors, and in each case the authorship of the work is to remain an unavoidable secret… No name will help the novel, or story, to success. Its success will depend solely on the writer’s ability to catch and retain the reader’s interest. From a current review, “A novel of psychological complexity that touches on controversial subjects such as sexuality and drug use, A Modern Mephistopheles is a penetrating and powerful study of human evil and its appalling consequences.” BAL 184 – Wright 36.

Only reprints are to be found. This is the hard to find First Edition.

1955 – THE MODEL ENGINEER – 27 ISSUES

1955 – THE MODEL ENGINEER – 27 ISSUES

Model Engineer Magazine was first published, in the United Kingdom, to support the hobby of model engineering in 1898 by Percival Marshall, who was to remain its editor for over 50 years. It has been owned by MyTime Media since 2008. The magazine began focusing on the emergence of a new hobby — the construction of models (often working) and experimental engineering, largely in metal. It appealed to professional engineers, jobbing machinists and anyone interested in making working mechanisms. Subject matter ranges from articles about techniques and tools to profiles of full-size prototypes of modelling subjects. The main content is ‘constructional articles’ describing projects at various levels of detail. WIKIPEDIA

Offered as a lot are 27 different issues from 1955, softcover with some edgewear and wear or tear to a few spines. Appears to be about 36 pages in each issue – the magazines measure about 7 1/4 inches by 9 3/4 inches. A wealth of information, Issues usually cost $6 each and more

Price – $85 for the entire lot (Order No. eb1619)

c1884 – THROUGH THE HOUSATONIC VALLEY TO THE HILLS AND HOMES OF BERKSHIRE

By Clark W. Bryan of Great Barrington, Massachusetts – Prepared for the Housatonic Railroad with illustrations from the Cameras of Julius Hall and George W. Lovejoy.

Offered is the uncommon original 32 page travel booklet (sadly also now available in Print on Demand) measuring about 4 7/8 inches by 6 3/4 inches. Fifteen wonderful B&W illustrations and in the rear a map of the Housatonic R.R. [Railroad) and Connecting Lines. This great takes you up the Connecticut River through Connecticut and towns in the Litchfield Hills to the hills of the Berkshires including Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lenox, Pittsfield. Two pages include details on Summer Resort Hotels along the route. Packed with information and nostalgic details, I purchased this for my personal summer resort and travel collection when my bookshop was in the Litchfield Hills in New Preston, CT. But, now time for a new home.

Includes a list of summer resort hotel accommodations and rates in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut and lower Berkshires. On Page 5 in the text it states, “during the season of 1884” thus the date listed. Our shop was formerly in this area, and I found of interest the mention (and illustration) of the ABOVE-ALL MOUNTAIN HOUSE that was to be built in Warren, CT to be opened the next season. With an elevation of 2,000 feet the new hotel was to have a 125 tower allowing views all the way to the Hudson and Connecticut Rivers and the Brooklyn Bridge. Having always been fascinated by summer resorts, Cathy and I travelled to Above All State Park (actually only 1456 feet elevation) in my 1930 Model A Ford Roadster one day to see what I could find of the hotel. Alas, nothing was there, and I have never ever been able to find any reference about the existence of this Mountain House. A great piece of ephemera.

and, now four sample two page spreads followed by the route map

THE UNIVERSAL PENMAN by GEORGE BICKHAM Original – circa 1741 plate THE HONEST MERCHANT

THE UNIVERSAL PENMAN by GEORGE BICKHAM
Original – circa 1741
 plate
THE HONEST MERCHANT – THOROWGOOD TO TRUEMAN by G. BLAND

An original copperplate engraving from Bickham’s noted work. Paper measures about 9 7/8 inches by 15 1/2 inches. There is some light foxing as you can see, and an old bend/fold on the lower right. When I obtained this example it was framed in a totally inappropriate metal frame, and double matted. To save on shipping costs (and you would not have wanted the 20th century metal frame with an original 18th century engraving) I am selling the print in the old matte as illustrated.

George Bickham was the most famous English writing master and engraver of the early 18th century and was best known for his engraving work in “The Universal Penman”, a collection of writing examplars which helped to popularize the English Round Hand script in the 18th century.

and here is the backside, showing you how it is partially attached to the backing.

and a close up of the very well done hand-coloring to the illustration

1887 ROYAL JUBILEE – QUEEN VICTORIA -COLLECTION OF FOUR BOUND NEWSPAPERS – CHROMOLITHS and BLACK and WHITE ENGRAVINGS

1887 ROYAL JUBILEE – QUEEN VICTORIA -COLLECTION OF FOUR BOUND NEWSPAPERS – CHROMOLITHS and BLACK and WHITE ENGRAVINGS

Bound in olive green cloth, hardcover measuring about 12 inches by 15 1/2 inches are three London publications (plus one) relating to the Queen’s Golden, 50th, anniversary. Read details below about the large number of black and white engravings and impressive full-color chromoliths – depending upon how you count two-page spreads, there are 14 color plates. From these issues I find individual black and white illustration pages selling for $20 to $40 each and more. The color chromos bring much more more if found individually, but here I have the complete issue with all the plates. Overall condition (I am conservative) good plus to very good.

Included are:

1 – THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS JUBILEE NUMBER, JUNE 13, 1887, 32 pages, over 20 pages with engravings, some are full page. Some great advertisements

2 – THE JUBILEE CELEBRATION NUMBER OF THE GRAPHIC, JUNE 28, 1887, starts (for some reason in this bound volume) with page 3 – a full page engraving of “The Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. Continues on to page 66. At least six full page engravings, and there are four two-page engravings. Most other pages also have B&W illustrations, and many ads.

3 – HERE LIES THE MOST VALUE — THE GRAPHIC CHRISTMAS NUMBER , 1887 packed with color chromoliths. Starts with a full page color plate, “The Squire’s Christmas Box,” then picks up with page 4 ending at page 33 with another full page color plate. The two page color chromos (if found) run $50 and much more each, and (counting is hard) there are four of them. In addition, I count about seven single full page color plates — THUS 15 PAGES OF COLOR CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS.

4 – THE GRAPHIC: AN ILLUSTRATED WEEKLY NEWSPAPER, SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1888. Volume 36, No. 945 – 24 pages plus index. Pages 16 to 24 (followed by a second index) appears to be an Index from July to December, 1887, along with some articles and more B&W engravings. Two page engraving – “Church Parade of the Scots Greys at Brighton.

This is an amazing assemblage someone gathered and bound probably in the late 1880s.

below two page illustration – A STORY OF THE SEA

and, this two page spread is – ROBINSON CRUSOING A TAIL OF ADVENTURE

PRICE – $400
