c1920-30s – HUNTLEY & PALMERS BOOK SHAPED BISCUIT TIN

c1920-30s – HUNTLEY & PALMERS BOOK SHAPED BISCUIT TIN

As an out-of-print bookseller I have collected many items that resemble books, but are not books. Over the past over 25 years I have been able to add to my collection every tin that Huntley & Palmers made in the shape of a book, sets or books, and the revolving stand with books. Moving some items around in another display area in my home I found I had this duplicate. No real need to have two (although I often do have multiples) I thought someone could add this red book tin to their collection. Overall measurements are about 7 by 9 3/4 inches.

Made to look like tooled red leather with raised bands on the spine, the edges of the book block are gilt with the simulation of pages. The Huntley Palmers varieties of book shaped tins are pictured on pages 30-31of DECORATIVE PRINTED TINS by David Griffith. The caption states the red leather book tin appeared in 1920. A scarce 1996 Christie’s auction catalog of Huntley and Palmers Biscuit tins dates the red book tin as 1930.

c1894 – TALES TO DELIGHT FROM MORNING TILL NIGHT – RAPHAEL TUCK & SONS No. 1109

I have had this book put away for years, and have never found another copy for sale or sold. The only reference I have found confirming all details is on the TuckDB Ephemera website. This is an UNCOMMON Tuck book, measuring about 7 1/2 by 10 inches.

Overall good, some smudges on the interior, and wear to the cream colored pictorial boards. Red cloth spine binding. Nine color plates (as catalogued in the Tuck database and printed in Germany) are present and delightful. A number of black and white drawings in text.

Stories told by: E. Nesbit, Anthony Guest, Helen Marion Burnside, and others. Illustrations by Maud Goodman, Herbert Horwitz, Jessie Watkins, etc. etc.

following are some sample pages, and three of the nine color plates.

1884 – A WONDER-BOOK FOR GIRLS AND BOYS by NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE

1884 – A WONDER-BOOK FOR GIRLS AND BOYS by NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE, illustrations by F. S. CHURCH

Published by Houghton, Mifflin and Co. (1884), Boston, 150pp , an extremely clean, tight and bright copy of this work illustrated by F. S. Church. Do not let the EX-LIB scare you – small paper label on spine, bookplate on front pastedown (1909), embossed stamp on title page and preface, and library pocket on rear pastedown. Of interest is the librarian’s handwritten inscription above the library pocket with the “Condensed Rules”, which states: “Not to be issued to children.” Guess that is one way to make a children’s book last. A nice copy with only light wear to the corners. good+, red decorated cloth, aeg (hardcover) (EX-LIB).
